NEHES Chapters Maine Healthcare Engineers' summer picnic 2010 The monthly meeting was held June 18, 2010 at Bailey Island on the Maine Seacoast. The menu included lobster, steak, salads and desserts as well as Bob Lord’s homemade French fries. There was no formal business meeting. The invitation went to all MHES members and the NEHES President. There were good numbers of MHES members, family, several vendors, and guests present. Bob Lord (retired Director of Plant Operations at Parkview Adventist Medical Center in Brunswick), Don Garrison, FASHE, CHFM (retired Chief of Facility Management Franklin County Health Network), and This was an excellent time to network, cultivate professional relationships, interact with vendors and give back to the Society. Commitment by Facilities Managers, Engineers, and Directors to the healthcare mission was evident. Both Milt Dudley and Brian Delong were scheduled to attend but were called by their healthcare organizations to a mandatory Leadership Workout. They were missed but the Society appreciated the professional commitment they demonstrated in putting responsibility into perspective and fulfilling company obligations first. Hussey, CHFM, CFPS MHES State Chapter Representative Meeting Minutes April 23, 2010 11:30 Lunch Matt Lampron and Gordon Hart from Auburn manufacturing presented on Ever Green Cut ‘n Wrap insulation kits. Brian DeLong started the business meeting, with the financial report ($4256), reminding everyone to check if they had paid their annual MEHES dues. Randy Hussey gave an update on NEHES. Milt Dudley discussed proposed by law changes being reviewed by the NEHES Board. Brian asked for nominations for Engineer of the Year. Dan Bickford nominated! Next meeting May 28th at MHA in Augusta Open forum Discussions revolved around the beginning of planning for the summer celebration for MHES members and spouses. Don informed us that Bob Lord had offered to have us at The Bailey Island Yacht Club. The meal will be lobster and\or steak, salads, desserts and soft drinks. Paper goods will be supplied. Approximately 28 people were in attendance. Brian DeLong, Chapter President, introduced the speakers while lunch was served.
The presentation provided information for terms such as listed, labeled, AHJ, Rated, Door frames, hardware, assemblies etc. Samples of door assembly sections were handed out, 3 ring notebook binder given to each person, business cards, and a paper copy of the powerpoint presentation.
Hardware Consultants sponsored the lunch and followed up after the meeting expressing appreciation for the opportunity to present and answer questions.

John Burpee ¡V State of Maine Chief Boiler, Elevator & Tramway Inspector Discussed recent findings; Attendance requirements ¡V trying to do morewith less staff, required maintenance for items within the code boundary, submitting the proper paperwork to document work with in the code boundary Shared concerns about wood/solid fuel boilers being installed in commercial buildings. Boilers must be ASME code compliant. Contact his office with any questions. He highly recommended contacting his office prior to converting/switching boiler fuel types. - Fire Hazards, Head Protection, Ladders ¡³ The most common hazards in construction were reviewed: - Falls, Stuck by machinery, caught in trenches, electrocutions ¡³ When OSHA would visit was discussed: - Large projects, Roof/trenching work, Response to a complaint ¡³ The following are areas of OSHA¡¦s focus: - Fabricated metal panels, Powered industrial vehicles, Foundries, Fall Hazards ¡³ Using PPE was stressed. ¡³ OSHA Hot Topics were discussed: - Pandemic preparedness, Outreach to schools, Flammable dust ¡³ It was noted that the field operations manual is available on-line. ¡³ Safety Works is a program that¡¦s available to assist with OSHA compliance. They can be contacted at safetyworksme.com. ¡³ In closing Brian recommended that everyone should visit OSHA¡¦s website. ¡´ Gary Gerow will forward membership forms to all members to remind them that 2009 dues are due. ¡´ NEHES update was provided. MHES has the spring seminar next year. ¡´ Next meeting will be held on 5/27/2009 at Florian Hall, 45 Commerce Drive, Augusta, Me. The meeting will consist of a seminar on Commercial Kitchen Ventilation & Hood Suppression Systems, with a MHES Business meeting at lunch. ¡´ General Discussion: Mike Connolly asked about how other facilities were completing interim life safety audits for all open PFI¡¦s.
