Two Chapters Hold Joint Meeting and Education Program

New Hampshire Society of Healthcare Engineers and Vermont Healthcare Engineering Society
On August 14 the New Hampshire and Vermont Healthcare Engineers Societies came together to provide their members relevant information and education. The meeting was held at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH and was well attended by members of both states.

The day’s events began with Chris Bergeron, the New Hampshire chapter president, welcoming the guests and presenters to the day’s activities. Chris then introduced the president of the Vermont chapter, Brian Sallisky, CHFM, who also welcomed the guests and recognized the event’s organizers. Brian then introduced Joe Mona, a long-time NEHES Board member, who extolled the virtues of education, the hard work of this meeting’s organizers, and of the NEHES Board of Directors who labor each year to present and coordinate the Spring Seminar, the upcoming Fall Conference (September 27-30) and Technical Exposition, newsletters, and the NEHES web site.

The educational sessions included an illuminating discussion on surgical lighting presented by John Schreiber, the Senior Sales Consultant for Berchtold Corporation. John brought along actual examples of HID and LED surgical lighting and provided the background, application and a look at the future in surgical lighting applications.

Dave Dagenais, SASHE, CHFM, CHSP followed and delivered an excellent presentation on the recent NFPA 99 events that returned the proposed revisions to committee. Dave described how the code revision process is structured, how the most recent proposals were addressed, and how the proposals were returned to the committee. Dave was also very clear on how any interested party can submit a proposal to change or add language during the code revision process. Dave also had a few comments regarding wet locations that he would be happy to repeat if one would like to hear his personal opinion on the subject. On Dave’s presentation Joe Mona noted, "Dave Dagenais did an awesome presentation on NFPA 99. NEHES is very privileged to have such a professional and knowledgeable advocacy representative on the NFPA Technical Committee." This comment was echoed by many in attendance.

Jack Gosselin, FASHE, CHFM, of Gosselin Associates, entertained those assembled during lunch by providing an overview of the evolving and ever expanding roles of those in healthcare engineering and facilities management. Jack also provided details on what healthcare organizations are looking for in their engineering and facilities leaders. Jack indicated that experience, education, and credentialing (such as the CHFM designation) were paramount.

The final presentation of the day was provided by Ray Forsell, CCE, P.E. on his top ten issues within NFPA 99 that he repeatedly addresses. Ray provided an overview of how NFPA 99 applies in New Hampshire and Vermont. Ray then led an informative discussion by citing code and providing an interpretation of his areas of concern. These issues included grounding and current leakage requirements, the definition of patient vicinity, gas systems and gas storage requirements. Ray provided a wealth of information and clarification on these issues.

At the conclusion of the educational sessions, there was a raffle and then a tour of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center energy plant that was well attended. The raffle featured prizes from some generous vendors and the NEHES Board of Directors. Among the prizewinners were the following:

2010 Vermont Healthcare Engineers' Society was won by Lindsey Harbour

2010 NEHES membership for a Vermont participant was won by Robert Prohaska

2010 New Hampshire Society of Healthcare Engineers was won by Chris Dozier.

2010 NEHES membership for a New Hampshire participant was won by Bob Lozeau.

This event was made possible by a number of individuals who deserve credit for their efforts. This includes grateful thanks to all the presenters, Joe Mona for representing NEHES, Brian Sallisky and Mark Blanchard, CHFM, of the Vermont Healthcare Engineers’ Society, and Jona Roberts, CHFM, of the New Hampshire Society of Healthcare Engineers for all the organizing and production work. In addition, special thanks go to all members of the New Hampshire Society of Healthcare Engineers for approving this meeting, and to Tim Bishop and John Dunleavy, CHFM, for their individual efforts. I would also like to thank all the attendees for seeking out educational opportunities to enhance their knowledge and their profession.

Fellow VHES Members;

Let me first extend my most sincere gratitude for your confidence in allowing me to serve as President of our fine organization. I can only hope to provide some level of the leadership and dedication provided by Mark Blanchard during his two year term as Chapter President and the term that he filled when Doug Stringfield left the area. Under Mark’s leadership our chapter has and continues to grow in strength and number. Our presence and recognition with NEHES has grown, as was acknowledged by being awarded, for the second straight year, the NEHES’ "Chapter Excellence Award". Mark was instrumental in the establishment of our website, which he continues to develop and improve upon. Mark’s strength and drive have realigned our organizational interaction from one end of our great State to the other.

Mark, I know I speak for all of the members of VHES when I extend to you a very hearty thank you for a job very well done.

When we met in Randolph back in September, in addition to my being elected as Chapter President, Mark Blanchard was again elected as Chapter Vice President and Michael Marriott was elected as Chapter Secretary/Treasurer. Additionally, Mark will serve as Primary Chapter Representative on the NEHES Board of Directors and I will serve as Alternate Chapter Representative to that same NEHES Board of Directors. Mark will continue to serve as Chairman of the NEHES Archives Committee and I will continue to serve as Chairman of the NEHES Research Committee and as NEHES Chapter Liaison.

At our annual meeting, we discussed our goals and objectives for this next year. Among these goals is a strong desire to strengthen our chapter and continue to expand our ability to collectively share among our membership the great wealth of knowledge held within our group and work together to refine the jobs we all do so very well.

Following is a list of our proposed schedule, including location and educational topics. For those requiring credits to apply toward certification and/or renewal of credentials, we are now applying for ceu’s/contact hours from the AHA/ASHE through a program sponsored by NEHES.

  • On Friday, November 21st, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, Brattleboro, VT
    • Rob Prohaska has arranged with VT Dept. of Public Safety (Bruce Martin), to present on subject of VT Fire Safety Codes. AHA/ASHE has awarded 2.0 contact hours / .2 CEU’s for this event. Please acknowledge your intent to attend by 11/14/08. Please e-mail that intent to me at, rbs@phin.organd to Rob Prohaska at rprohaska@bmhvt.org. (Agenda will be sent next week.)
  • On Friday, January 9, 2009, Gifford Hospital, Randolph, VT. Violent patients and duress signaling.
  • On Friday, March 13, 2009, Springfield Hospital, Springfield, VT. LED lighting choices and exterior lighting.

  • On Friday, July 10, 2009, Southwestern VT Health Care, Bennington, VT. Mold and asbestos remediation/abatement. Also tour of new central utility plant.

As so very well provided for by Rob Prohaska, I would ask that those individuals sponsoring the meeting and program for each of the above listed educational topics please arrange for the program and provide me with the subject text and presenter bio. With this information, I will ask that Jack Gosselin, from NEHES, apply for what ever continuing education contact credits are available.

As you can see, our organization is strong……Our goals are strong……Our future is strong. Together we will make this a very pleasant and productive chapter year.

All my very best,

Respectfully submitted,

R. Brian Sallisky, CHFM

Vermont Healthcare Engineers’ Society

Meeting Report – September 12, 2008

Presented to NEHES Board

Vermont Healthcare Engineers’ Society held its annual business meeting on Friday, September 12, 2008, at the Three Stallion Inn, in Randolph, Vermont.

Due to the nature of the meeting, a formal educational component was not provided, but rather an open forum, general discussion.

The assembled members held their election of officers for the 2008/2009 year. Elected as Chapter President was Brian Sallisky, CHFM. Elected as Chapter Vice President was Mark Blanchard, CHFM. Elected as Secretary/Treasurer was Michael Marriott. The membership expressed their appreciation to Mark for the successful leadership he provided as Chapter President. Under Mark’s leadership VHES has made an impressive recovery and growth.

Serving as Primary Representative to the New England Healthcare Engineers’ Board of Directors, will be Mark Blanchard. Serving as Alternate Representative to the NEHES BOD will be Brian Sallisky.

A schedule of chapter meetings was developed with primary/alternate locations and educational subjects. It was the general desire to focus the educational components of our ’08-’09 year on those elegable for inclusion and accreditation as ceu credits given the growing number of members requiring continuing education credits. NEHES Board member Jack Gosselin has agreed to make application with ASHE for any documentable educational events sponsored be the member chapters of NEHES.

Mark discussed the general state of the chapter and its website. Discussion continued regarding avenues to continue the development/growth of our chapter.

Mark reported that VHES will, for the second year, be presented the Chapter Excellence Award. This being the second year of this recognition award created by NEHES Immediate Past President Kevin Keating, CHFM, current NEHES President Fred Leffingwell, CHFM decided to continue this award designed as a means of recognizing chapters that have performed to a measurable point with regards to growth, educational development for their members, participation in regional activities and general performance/compliance with established conduct expectations.

We had some preliminary discussion regarding our chapter responsibility of hosting the 2011 NEHES Annual Conference. We discussed our role as host chapter for that important NEHES Conference and asked for member participation. Several members indicated their willingness to provide for the needs of the chapter in supporting this conference. Asked to chair the committee to develop the educational program, Ray Forsell, PE accepted the challenge without hesitation. Several other members are willing to fill other roles and will plan to become more actively involved in the next few months.

The schedule of our next meeting is Friday, November 21, 2008 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, in Brattleboro. The educational component will deal with issues related to recent changes in the Vermont Fire safety Code and ins enforcement. Presenting will be Bruce Martin, Regional Manager for the Fire Safety Division of the VT Department of Public Safety.
